Thomas Jefferson University Hospital set out to transform a city block of windows into a bold branding and wayfinding experience. The timeline left no room for delay, scheduling the installation during cold winter months. The project demanded window film solutions that performed reliably in cold weather conditions to bring together brand impact, patient privacy, and installation performance.

The Challenge

Installing window graphics in cold weather presents unique challenges. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania wanted to install impactful window graphics that told their story.

With plans underway in Philadelphia to celebrate the United States 250th birthday, the hospital wanted to get the installation completed by the end of 2025. This meant the installation team would be working through winter weather conditions, a significant challenge for wide format graphics.

The Requirements

The team at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital envisioned the project as both a branding and wayfinding initiative. These window graphics would bring the hospital’s brand down to street level, creating a more human, accessible presence while reinforcing its commitment to patient care. “We wanted to build consistency and recognition across our sites. The continuous wall of windows along Chestnut and 10th Street gave us a perfect canvas for telling our story with clarity and impact,” said Grace Mateja, Jefferson Enterprise Art Director.

At the same time, privacy was critical. Portions of the windows faced sensitive patient care areas where discretion was non-negotiable. “As care providers, our staff and patients require privacy in sensitive areas. This was essential,” added Mateja.

The solution needed to balance bold branding, intuitive wayfinding, privacy, and winter installation.

The Solution

The installation along Chestnut Street used a strategic mix of opaque, semi-opaque and translucent window film solutions. This approach supported all the project’s requirements- intuitive wayfinding, enhanced branding, and privacy where required.

Continental Grafix cold weather solutions, panoRama Innova Ice perforated window film and X-Treme vinyl, were selected for their reliable performance in low temperatures. “We completed the initial installation just before Thanksgiving, with an additional installation in mid-January,” said Eric Berger, President, Color Reflections. “It’s great to have products we can install in the cold temperatures.
